This one’s going to be a little messy.
Bear with me.
When I was in middle school, we had all kinds of drills.
There were fire drills, medical emergency drills, and even shooter drills (where you practice what to do if someone with harmful intentions comes to the school).
Scary stuff.
During those shooter drills, we were taught something interesting: never run in a straight line.
Running straight makes you an easy target.
Instead, you’re supposed to run in a zig-zag pattern, constantly changing direction, because it makes you harder to hit.
I’m not here to focus on shooter drills, though.
I’m bringing this up to introduce the term: zig-zag. And more importantly: Zag
The Idea of a Zag
The word zag by itself means to make a sharp turn in a completely different direction.
Apparently, a marketing legend, Sir John Hegarty, popularized the term when Levi’s (the Jeans company) was about to launch black jeans.
At that time, almost everyone wore only blue jeans.
Instead of continuing to just compete with the sea of blue, Levi’s did something unexpected: they zagged.
My Own Zag
When I first started this blog, I wanted to share my thoughts on medicine, Christianity, and life in general.
It’s been a great journey.
But now, I feel a strong pull...to zag.
I’m moving a good portion of my faith-based writing to a new home on Substack, where I can go deeper and build a dedicated space for those reflections.
If you’ve been following my blog because you value that part of my writing, I’d love for you to join me there.
[Here’s the link to the Substack]
The blog here isn’t going anywhere, though.
I have big dreams for it and exciting things planned. It will keep growing and evolving, but in a slightly different direction.
An Encouragement: Try Your Own Zag
We live in a world that often pressures us to zig to follow the straight, predictable path everyone else is taking.
But sometimes, the best thing you can do is to zag to try something different, to take a risk, to step off the beaten track.
It might feel scary.
It might feel messy.
People might not understand why you’re doing it.
But it can open new doors, spark creativity, and allow you to grow in unexpected ways.
So, if there’s a dream you’ve been putting off, or a new direction you’ve been afraid to take, maybe this is your sign to zag.
To make that sharp turn.
To see where it leads.
